MAINE vs. UMAINE-MACHIAS

Time, site: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. (exhibition), Alfond Arena, Orono

Series, last meeting: 0-0, first meeting

Key players: Maine* – 6-2 G Kevin Reed (14.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg), 6-10 F Mark Flavin (11.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg), 6-7 G-F Joe Campbell (8.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg), 6-3 G Chris Markwood (5.9 ppg), 6-2 G Ernest Turner (redshirted last year), 6-4 G-F Jermaine Jackson (injured last season); UM-Machias – 6-5 F Jeremiah Johnson (12.7 ppg), 6-3 G Gary Dussard (10.3 ppg), 6-3 G Joel Davila (13.8 ppg), 6-1 G Anthony Holyfield (11.8 ppg), 6-4 F Wayne Clarke (no statistics, hasn’t played), 5-8 G Charlie Calligan (11.7 ppg), 5-8 G Nedrie Simmons (10.0 ppg)

Outlook: This first-time meeting between the two Maine schools which have both become conference powers in recent years could be a good one, despite the differences between Division I and NAIA Division II teams. The unbeaten UMM Clippers are coming off a Sunrise Conference title and a run to the NAIA Division II National Tournament last year. The Clippers return three of five starters and eight of their top 10 players from last season’s squad. Maine returns four starters and is equally deep with seven of its top nine players back.
