New city employee

New employees with the city include Andrew Tarr, parking control aide at Bangor International Airport.

Newly retired is Gail Campbell, city clerk. Campbell was given a reception at the Bangor Civic Center.

Also honored with a reception recently was Patty Hamilton, who filled in as acting director for the Department of Health and Welfare after the untimely death of Mary Anne Chalila.

Designing Women

The annual show and sale of fine craft and artwork by Designing Women will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Holiday Inn on Main Street.

Housing Programs manager

T.J. Martzial, Bangor’s Housing Programs manager, was elected regional president of the National Community Development Association held Sept. 28-Oct. 1 in Portsmouth, N.H.

Having served as Bangor’s representative to the regional association since 1996, Martzial previously was vice chairman of the board. He will serve in his new office for two years.

The national office is headquartered in Washington, and the northeast region is one of six regional organizations that comprise the NCDA.

NCDA is a national nonprofit organization comprising more than 550 local governments that administer federally supported community and economic development, housing and human service programs. These include the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Community Development Block Grant and the HOME Investment Partnerships programs. Since 1968, NCDA has been at the forefront in securing effective and responsive housing and community development programs for local governments.

New city Web site

The city of Bangor has a new Web site at www.bangormaine.gov.

Art at the library

Bangor artist Rebecca Krupke presents “Welcome Home” in the lecture hall this month at Bangor Public Library. In her show of original oils and a video, Krupke explores “the way we view homes’ interior and exterior presence within our surroundings.”

An opening will be held 7-9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15.

In addition, veteran artist Robert F. Magnus is showing his works in the Stairwell Gallery. An educator who has taught on all academic levels, including teaching art at Columbia University, he has exhibited extensively in Maine and New York state.

Magnus said that an “ardent love of nature” lured him to Maine, and it is evident in his “presentations of the magnificent Maine coast, its lakes, forests and countryside.”

Computer resources grant

The JTG Foundation of Lewiston announced a major grant to expand public access to computer resources in rural Maine. The foundation awarded 76 computers to 22 libraries in Aroostook, Piscataquis, Somerset and Washington counties, and to the Bangor Public Library.

Libraries were invited to apply for up to 10 computers to upgrade or expand existing resources devoted to public access.

Coordination and implementation of the computer grant program was facilitated by the support and assistance of the Maine State Library, the Bangor Public Library and the staffs of Northeastern and Central Maine Library districts.

Photo collection

Cindy Boudreau of Hampden presented her mother’s photo collection to the Bangor Public Library on Oct. 28.

The Maine Memory Network, an offshoot of the Maine Historical Society, suggested that the Bangor Public Library would be the perfect home for Boudreau’s collection, which contains many images of local people, places and events. Many of the photos in the collection have appeared on the Maine Memory Network Web site.

Holiday door decoration

Florist and designer Bert Johnson will give a lecture, “Holiday Door Design,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in the Lecture Room at Bangor Public Library.

Johnson is an award-winning florist with more than 20 years of artistic experience. He is well known for his holiday displays. His appearance at the library is sponsored by the Bangor Garden Club.

Brewer

Kiwanis Club news

Brewer Kiwanis met recently at the Muddy Rudder with 21 in attendance. There was an interclub from Orono-Old Town: June Paul, Mike Pullen, Roger Taylor and Deanna Wade; and an interclub from Hampden: Frank Jewell, Dick Rollins, Stan Smith and Dave Theriault.

The newest member of Brewer Kiwanis is Deanna Gagner.

The next project for the club is a casino to be held at the Samoset in Rockport on Nov. 7 for the Maine Physical Educational Association’s annual conference.

At the last Key Club meeting an interclub sponsored a Christmas advertising project for businesses with help from Clear Channel Communications. Also, the Key Club just held a blood drive at the school.

Plans are being made for the annual children’s Christmas party to be held on Dec. 22.

The annual fall conference of the New England District of Kiwanis will be held Nov. 19-21 in Plymouth, Mass.

The gun raffle is coming to a close.

President Bill Newberry and secretary Herb Hopkins attended the Ellsworth Kiwanis Club meeting along with representation of other clubs in the division. Lt. Gov. Doug Hollingsworth led the meeting with discussion on Kiwanis membership and retention.

Brewer Kiwanis is looking for new members to help with projects and serving the needs of children. The group meets at 6 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

However, because of Thanksgiving, next month, meetings will be held Nov. 10 and 17. The Brewer Key Club will run the meeting on Nov. 10 as part of Key Club Week.

Corinth

Lamb and goat auction

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is organizing a lamb and goat auction to be held at noon, Saturday, Nov. 6, at Tilton’s Auction Facility on Puddledock Road in Corinth. People with animals to sell or wanting information may contact the Cumberland County Extension office at (800) 287-1471.

“There is typically a high demand for lambs and goats for ethnic holy days. High quality lambs and goats can bring a premium price,” said Richard Brzozowski, extension educator in Cumberland County. Brzozowski has been working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Maine Department of Agriculture to strengthen the market of Maine raised goats and lambs. Local auctions help to connect traditional livestock buyers and new buyers from Maine’s growing ethnic communities.

Corinth is about 30 minutes northwest of Bangor on Route 15.

Cooperative Extension will take part in the auction with educational displays and printed materials on goat and lamb production. “This auction is an opportune time to sell livestock before winter weather sets in,” Brzozowski said.

Glenburn

Thanksgiving festival

The Treworgy Family at Weliwoni Ranch will present the first annual Thanksgiving Funstuff Festival 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the ranch, 3202 Broadway, Glenburn.

Enjoy horse rides, petting zoo, fine handmade crafts, blueberry ceramics, homemade soaps, face painting, porcupine quill art, birch bark art, homemade pie and other goodies, and make pie on a stick by the campfire.

Levant

Developmental screening

A free developmental screening by Child Developmental Services Penobscot County will be held noon-2 p.m. Nov. 16 at Levant Elementary School. This is for all 3- and 4-year-old children, as well as 5-year-olds not yet eligible for kindergarten.

Orono

Medals for citizen aid

Robert Snow, 22, of Hampden has received a medal for citizen aid from the Orono Police Department.

As an employee at Ushuaia, Snow helped defuse a bad situation last September.

A second medal was presented to Tammy Shorette, 30, who alerted police to an erratic driver who drove through two red lights without stopping.

Free computer classes

The Orono Public Library offers free computer instruction, perfect for beginners, 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 6 and Nov. 13, and Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the library. Learn to use the Internet, do word processing, or whatever you wish through hands-on instruction.

A special computer class, “I Can Get it For You Wholesale: Shopping in the Web” will be held 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 20, at the library. From finding the perfect gift to getting a good price on a new appliance, the class is designed to put savvy shopping at one’s fingertips.
