Basketball, cheering sign-ups

ORRINGTON – The Orrington Recreation Committee will offer basketball for children from preschool to eighth grade for the 2004-05 season. League divisions are preschool and kindergarten, grades one and two, grades three through five girls and grade three through five boys, and grades six through eight co-ed.

“This is the first time we have offered a separate league for girls in grades three to five, but the interest level among both boys and girls in that age group has been so high, we decided it is time to try something new,” said Bruce Turner, recreation committee board president.

The recreation committee also will offer a concurrent cheering program for girls if there is enough interest

Sign-ups for basketball and cheering will be held 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, and Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Center Drive School cafeteria. Late registrations will be accepted until Saturday, Nov. 20, when teams will be assigned. The season starts in early December. Registration forms and information are available at orrington.govoffice.com, then click on “municipal departments,” then “recreation.”

The recreation committee is seeking team sponsors from the community, and parents to volunteer as coaches, assistant coaches and referees. To obtain information, call 825-3099 or 825-4549.

Karate training

BREWER – Sensei Steve Apsega of Eastern Maine Karate in Brewer recently returned from Okinawa, Japan, after an intense and inspiring two weeks of training in the birthplace of karate-do.

During his time in Okinawa, Apsega made daily visits to all five U.S. Marine Corps bases to assist in their well-established karate programs designed for soldiers and their families. Shorin-ryu karate has been adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps.

Thanks to Master Fusei Kise and all others who believe in the ancient art of karate, Apsega said, the tradition of karate-do is strong in Maine.
