VESTAL, N.Y. – America East Rookie of the Year Marie-Andree Canuel broke a scoreless tie 14:50 into the second half as the University of Maine topped New Hampshire 2-0 Friday and earned its second consecutive trip to the conference’s women’s soccer championship game.

Heather Hathorn added an insurance goal 8:50 later for the Black Bears.

The 13-5-1 Bears will play 14-5-1 Binghamton, a 3-0 semifinal winner over Northeastern, in Sunday’s noon final.

“It was our best game of the year,” said Maine coach Scott Atherley, whose Bears outshot the Wildcats 20-2. “Our performance, from start to finish, was as thorough and calculating as any game I’ve ever been associated with. Our players were highly motivated and very focused and they executed our game plan to perfection. UNH never threatened our goal.”

Midfielder Canuel’s 11th goal of the season came on a diving header off a free kick taken by Emily Stevens.

“She was on her knees when she headed it. It was a world-class goal,” said Atherley.

Erin Corey’s through ball resulted in Hathorn’s 10th goal.

“Heather had her back to the goal. She turned and hammered it home. It was a great finish,” said Atherley.

The Bears’ Tanya Adorno wasn’t required to make a save, while Lynn Gugliuzza made six saves for UNH, which finished at 11-8-2.
