VESTAL, N.Y. – Defender Meghan Taylor, the championship’s Most Outstanding Player, scored Binghamton’s first goal on a penalty kick Sunday, lifting the Bearcats to a 2-0 victory over the University of Maine in the America East championship game.

Kelly Burnham converted off a Vicky Verniceck assist for 14-5-1 Binghamton to back Kristie Bowers, who made six saves on 10 shots.

“It was a tough game,” said Maine coach Scott Atherley. “We put on a ton of pressure in the first half and that second goal really broke our back. They have a great team. They deserve all the credit in the world.”

Tanya Adorno made four saves on seven shots for 12-6-1 Maine.

Senior back Allison Kelly, along with midfielders Angela Clark and Marie-Andree Canuel were all named to the America East All-Tournament Team.

Bay Path 1, Husson 0

At Bangor on Saturday, Marianne Owens scored the only goal with less than four minutes left in the game to give Bay Path the North Atlantic Conference title.

Tournament MVP Denise Larochelle made 22 saves to register the shutout. Bay Path’s victory earns it a trip to the NCAA Division III national tournament.

Leah Drew made eight saves on nine shots for Husson, which closed an outstanding season at 13-5-2.

Field hockey

UM- Farmington 2, WNEC 1

At Springfield, Mass., Mary Sinclair scored the winning goal with 11 minutes remaining, leading second-seeded UM-Farmington past top-seeded Western New England College for the North Atlantic Conference championship on Saturday.

Allison Jameson scored first for WNEC, but Kristy Veazie tied it up before intermission. It was a scoreless second half until Sinclair scored.

Ashleigh Biette made 10 saves for the 14-5 Beavers. Jillian Brown made nine saves for 15-7 WNEC.

Middlebury 4, Colby 0

At Middlebury, Vt., Lauryn Nicasio scored twice Saturday, leading the Panthers past the White Mules in the NESCAC semifinals.

Ashely Pullen and Lacey Farrell each added a goal to 15-0 Middlebury’s tally.

Meghan McGillen made eight saves for the shutout. Jamie Enos saved 17 of 21 shots for 9-7 Colby College of Waterville.

Volleyball

Maine 3, Northeastern 1

At Boston, Shelly Seipp had a match-high 64 assists plus 30 digs, lifting Maine past Northeastern 30-25, 30-28, 31-33, 30-25 on Saturday.

For Maine (16-10 overall, 8-4 America East), Kaili Jordan had 22 kills and 20 digs. Leah Guidinger had 17 kills and 12 digs. Carmen Morgan had 13 kills and 23 digs. Brittany Howe had 13 kills.

Ashley Adamczyk of Northeastern (18-10, 9-3 AE) broke the school record for most digs in a single match with 39. Kira Batura had 16 kills and 27 digs. Karrin Moore had 15 kills and Bree Peterson had 58 assists.

Women’s hockey

Maine sweeps Wayne State

At Orono, Maine swept Wayne State, winning 4-3 on Sunday and 2-1 on Saturday.

On Sunday, Danielle Tangredi scored the winning goal in overtime off the rebound of a saved shot.

Laura Monk started off the scoring with a goal for Wayne State. Tristan Desmet evened it up for Maine before Jessica Snelgrove scored another for the Warriors. Andrea Steranko and Kate Sunstrum both scored for Maine in the second period and Kelly Zamora tied it up for Wayne State in the third.

Rachel Gettings saved 20 shots of 23 for 3-1-1 Maine. Tina Thibideau made 37 saves on 41 shots for 3-5-2 Wayne State.

On Saturday, Cheryl White and Sunstrum each scored once, lifting Maine to victory. Jessica Haydahl scored in the third for the Warriors.

Gettings saved 17 of 18 shots for the Black Bears. Val Turcotte made 14 saves on 16 shots for Wayne State.

Men’s basketball

EMCC 72, Mass Bay 59

At Unity, Mark Rivers led the Golden Eagles, scoring 35 points against Massachusetts Bay Community College on Sunday.

Chris Douglas had 15 rebounds and scored 4 points for Eastern Maine Community College of Bangor.

Jeremy Taitt led the Buccaneers with 18 points. Anthony Raines netted 15 points.
