According to Stacy Cox of the Bangor YMCA, its annual Benefit Auction is not only the organization’s “largest promotional fund-raiser of the year,” but tickets must be purchased in advance, so you should get yours now.

The auction is 5-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer.

Tickets are $20 each and are available at both Bangor Y locations, 127 Hammond St. and 17 Second St., or by calling either 941-2815 or 941-2808.

Last year’s event, Cox wrote, raised nearly $24,000 for the Bangor YMCA, which offers “a variety of programs that enrich youth, adults and families through fitness, recreation and social and recreational opportunities,” Cox said.

She wants readers to know that “we have lots of fantastic items” up for bid this year.

Once again, Stephen King has “donated some of the most exciting items,” she wrote of “six of his most popular books,” all of which are autographed and include “The Dark Tower VII,” “It,” “Needful Things,” “Bag of Bones,” “Gerald’s Game” and “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.”

Always a crowd favorite, she said, donations from the University of Maine athletic department include signed memorabilia, athletic tickets and a weekend trip to Boston College with the Maine men’s ice hockey team.

Day’s Jewelers, New England Outdoor Center, Canteen Service Co., Dead River Co., Old Town Canoe and Bennett’s Recreational Sports are among the other businesses that are helping make this another successful fund-raiser for the Bangor Y.

Your $20 ticket includes a silent auction, raffles, social hour, dinner and the live auction with Dick Cattelle as emcee and auctioneer.

All veterans are cordially invited to a special assembly 8-9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, in the gymnasium at Brewer High School.

Before the assembly, veterans are invited to a coffee and doughnut reception at 7:15 a.m. in the school’s Student Services room near the gym.

Brewer High School Key Club and Student Council adviser Mike Hutchins reports the event is not only an opportunity to honor veterans for their services to our country but also a chance to remind students why Thursday, Nov. 11, is a school holiday.

Maine Army National Guard Brig. Gen. William Libby will be the guest speaker at the assembly, which will also feature the Maine Army National Guard Band and the Hermon High School color guard.

Veterans who plan to attend can either call Hutchins at 989-4140, or just show up the day of the event.

Brewer High School is located just off Interstate 395 on Parkway South.

It’s time for the 11th annual Love Light Tree project at Millinocket Regional Hospital.

Sponsored by the MRH Auxiliary, president Joyce Given reports, for a small donation you can purchase one or more colored lights for the evergreen tree outside the hospital’s main lobby entrance.

And while the actual tree lighting is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, you have until Friday, Dec. 10, to purchase lights.

Donations begin at $3 for one light and $5 for two lights, continuing in varying amounts and prices from there.

White lights are in memory of someone, green is in honor of someone, red is in honor of a child and blue is for friendship.

Proceeds benefit three $500 auxiliary scholarships awarded to graduating seniors at Stearns High School in Millinocket, Schenck High School in East Millinocket and Katahdin High School in Stacyville.

Orders can be made by writing Terry Given, MRHA treasurer, 106 Prospect St., Millinocket 04462.

Order forms are available at Katahdin Printing Plus and the hospital lobby in Millinocket, and at the East Millinocket Library.

Last year’s project raised $1,900. This year’s MRHA goal is to exceed that amount.

The “school request season” has begun.

“Olivia” attached her hand-printed request to her teacher’s letter, explaining that Olivia’s class “is learning about the U.S. this year,” and asking that we print her letter in the hopes “your readers will write to us.”
