SCARBOROUGH – Only the skeletons of charred vehicles were left Wednesday after an overnight fire leveled two garages.

The two-alarm blaze at Maietta Construction caused as much as $1 million in damage, according to early estimates. There were no injuries.

Investigators believe the fire, which started Tuesday night and burned into Wednesday morning, was probably accidental. Due to the extensive damage, fire officials do not expect to determine a cause.

“It was unsalvageable by the time we got there,” Scarborough fire Chief Michael Thurlow said.

The fire destroyed a six-bay garage that Maietta Construction and members of the Maietta family used to store vehicles and equipment.

Scotts Lawn Service, which was renting an abutting garage, lost its whole operation in the fire.

“We are really in limbo right now,” said owner Peter Lyford.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection responded to the fire amid concerns over pesticides and fertilizers from Scotts.

The DEP will oversee the buildings’ demolition and disposal of debris.
