Holiday fair proceeds will send children to camp

Members of the historic Hammond Street Congregational Church in Bangor want you to know they have great plans for the money they raise today with your help.

The HSCC Holiday Fair is an all-day event, with the fair 8 a.m.-1 p.m.; a fish chowder luncheon at 11 a.m.; an auction at noon; and a baked bean supper at 5 p.m. today at the church on the corner of Hammond and High streets in Bangor.

“The first $1,000 we earn will go to provide scholarships for summer camp for the youth of the church,” wrote Eda Morrison.

“The rest of the proceeds will go to help with the cost of a new slate roof and other renovations to our building, which is now 171 years old and a Bangor landmark.

“The building is also on the [National] Historic Register,” she added.

The HSCC Holiday Fair features items from homemade baked goods to fir wreaths and greens, knit and craft items, and new and used books.

You’ll find pie by the slice, gifts for the kids, and workers who will wrap your gifts while you visit the popular Trash and Treasures section.

Quilt lovers making the rounds of holiday fairs should visit the All Souls Congregational Church Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the church on Broadway in Bangor.

Joanne Reeves reports that this bazaar will feature a quilt show with more than 150 quilts displayed in the church sanctuary. Some quilts will be for sale.

The bazaar cafe features beverages and breakfast items in the morning, live music, and lunch served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The lunch is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Lynn White is chairwoman of the bazaar, which features handcrafted gifts and homemade candy as well as jams and other baked products.

You also will find a garden shop, gifts for birds and a silent auction.

Friends of Hampden Hockey is hosting a benefit spaghetti dinner for Dan Boutin and his family.

That event has two seatings: one from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and the second at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Hampden VFW Hall on Canoe Club Road.

Boutin suffered a major stroke in September and is recovering at a local hospital.

It is hoped he will be able to return home at the end of November, Deb Richards reports.

Tickets are $5 for individuals or $20 for a family.

“We still have tickets available,” Richards said, “and people can purchase them at the door.”

The American Guild of Organists’ Bangor Chapter hosts “Discovering Mendelssohn” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway in Bangor.

Organ, piano, violin, vocal quartet and choral pieces by Mendelssohn will be presented by Kay Byther Eames, dean of AGO Bangor Chapter; Dr. Kevin Birch of St. John’s Catholic Church, Bangor; Dean Stein of Arcady Music Society; Dr. Patricia Stowell, a director of Kneisel Hall Young Musicians, Blue Hill; the Chamber Choir at St. John’s Parish; All Souls Senior Choir and members of the AGO.

There is no admission, but donations will be accepted for the chapter’s work.

The public is invited to hear Mariann Moore present a program about her expedition to Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro during the Schoodic Audubon Chapter meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the Whiting Community Center on Route 1.

Her talk will include slides, and will illustrate the time and effort it takes to climb Kilimanjaro.

Lisa Wahlstrom reports the Maine Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is conducting grant-training sessions for members of organizations who want to apply for funding from the Maine Affiliate in 2005.

The first training session is 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Lucerne Inn in Lucerne.

The deadline for grant applications from the Maine Affiliate is Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005.
