MAINE vs. BOSTON COLLEGE

Time, site: Saturday, Sunday, 1 p.m.; Alfond Arena, Orono

Records: Maine 3-1-1 (0-0 Hockey East); BC 1-7 (0-3)

Series, last meeting: Maine leads 10-3-2; BC 5-2 on 2/28/04

Key players: Maine – LW Sonia Corriveau (2 goals, 2 assists), RW Kate Sunstrum (2 & 1), RW Andrea Steranko (1 & 2), C Tristan Desmet (2 & 0), D Julie Poulin (1 & 1), D Kelly Law (0 & 0), G Rachel Gettings (3-1, 1.72 goals-against average, .917 save percentage); Boston College – C Sarah Feldman (5 & 3), D Deborah Spillane (3 & 4), C Colleen Harris (2 & 3), RW Michelle Lombardi (1 & 1), D Sarah Carlson (1 & 0), G Alison Quandt (1-5, 4.20, .832), G Christine Moynihan (0-1, 2.43, .913)

Outlook: Former John Bapst defenseman Kim Meagher of Hampden returns to the area. The BC Eagle has an assist in seven games. Against common opponents, Maine beat and tied Vermont (2-0, 2-2) and swept Wayne State 2-1, 4-3 (OT), while BC beat Vermont 3-1 and lost two 4-3 games to Wayne State. Maine is off to its best start ever. The two coaches played against each other in college: BC’s Tom Mutch played at Northeastern and Guy Perron is a former Black Bear. Mutch was an assistant coach for the gold medal-winning 1998 U.S. women’s Olympic team. Maine will continue its “attack with four and defend with three” philosophy. Preventing second shots is one key for the Bears and they want to drive the BC net looking for second and third chances. Defenseman Emily Stevens joins the Bears after finishing her soccer season.
