ORONO – Two Maine firms have been awarded the $16 million contract for the University of Maine’s new student recreation and fitness center.
OEST Associates of South Portland and Terrence J. DeWan & Associates of Yarmouth will be working with the Boston-based Cannon Design to provide architectural and engineering services for the project.
The total cost of the facility is estimated at $25 million, which includes already-completed feasibility studies.
Both Maine companies previously have worked with the university, and as the lead firm on the project, Cannon Design is experienced in recreation and fitness center design.
The company has built more than 40 similar centers at campuses throughout the United States and Canada.
Construction of the 85,000-square-foot facility is expected to begin sometime next summer or fall, according to UM spokesman Joe Carr.
The building will house a pool, jogging track, multi-use courts, weight training and fitness areas, locker rooms, lounges and administrative offices.
Approved more than a year ago, the facility will sit on the highest point on campus near what is known as the Hilltop Quad. More than 65 percent of the on-campus student population live on that northern side of campus, according to UM officials.
A decision has not been made regarding the future of the existing Latti Fitness Center, according to Carr.
