ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of Maine eked out a 15-12 victory in the fifth game Friday night to beat Northeastern 3-2 in the semifinals of the America East Volleyball Championship.
Coach Lynn Theehs’ third-seed Black Bears (19-10) won 30-19, 19-30, 30-25, 28-30, 15-12 to advance to today’s 4 p.m. America East championship match against host and No. 1 seed Albany (26-6). Albany beat No. 4 Binghamton 3-0 in a Friday semifinal.
UMaine split two regular-season matches with Albany, which is 11-0 at home in 2004. The winner earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Kaili Jordan paced the Bears with 17 kills and 17 digs. Shelly Seipp registered a match-high 45 assists and added 13 digs. Leah Guidinger posted 13 kills and 13 digs and Carmen Watson contributed 12 kills and 18 digs for UMaine.
“We were determined to win,” Theehs said. “We knew that we had to be tough and showed up and played with guts and persevered at the end.”
Whitney Turner led Northeastern with 17 kills and 14 digs. Bree Peterson piled up 38 assists.

At Gorham, Ashley Marble scored 24 points to push the University of Southern Maine past Husson College in the USM Tournament.
Katie Frost had 14 points, seven assists and five steals for the Huskies and Lauren Samuelson had nine points.

In the first game, Sefi Adasi had 12 points and 16 rebounds for Wellesley.
