BREWER – A Volkswagen Beetle struck an SUV that had turned in front of it on Parkway South Friday afternoon knocking the SUV onto its driver’s side and sliding into another vehicle that had been stopped nearby, according to police.

The Beetle’s driver, identified as Jennifer Smith, 29, of West Haven, Conn., suffered minor injuries and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center to be treated for what she later told police was a strained ankle.

Victoria Wright, 52, was the driver of the 1997 Isuzu Rodeo that witnesses said was heading north on Parkway South and turned left into the back entrance of the Brewer Shopping Center, cutting in front of Smith. After the crash, Wright climbed out through the back hatch of her overturned vehicle, but was uninjured, reported Brewer police Cpl. Levi Sewall.

A third vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer, was stopped at the back entrance to the Brewer Shopping Center at the red light at the intersection of Dirigo Drive and Parkway South.

The Trailblazer received some damage but its driver, Diane Corey, 48, of Holden, was not injured, according to the police.

The accident occurred about 5:10 p.m. and traffic on Parkway south was reduced to one lane for about half an hour, Sewall said.
