Gracie propels Husson past Clarkson

GORHAM – Holly Gracie scored 18 points and Annie McIntosh added 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Husson College women’s basketball team defeated Clarkson 58-51 in the consolation game of University of Southern Maine Tip-Off Tournament.

The Eagles outscored Clarkson 8-2 over the final four minutes to earn the victory.

Michelle Murray added 11 points for the Eagles.

Gracie was named to the all-tournament team.

At Gorham, Ashley Marble and Katie Frost combined for 34 points to lead the University of Southern Maine to victory in the championship game of the USM Tip-Off Tournament.

Marble, the tournament MVP, and Frost each scored 17 points, with Marble also gathering 10 rebounds and making all nine of her free-throw attempts. Frost shot 5-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Karen Sirois paced the University of Maine at Farmington with 12 points.

At Waterville on Saturday, Tanya Robash had 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead the Mules to victory in the consolation game of the Colby Tip-Off Tournament.

Hamilton defeated Wellesley 70-67 in overtime to win the championship game.

Kathleen Nicholson added 11 points for Colby, while Wendy Bonner added 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals while earning all-tournament honors.

Margaret Blauvelt led St. Joseph’s with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Brittany Rauscher and Laura Pelkey had 10 points each,

Women’s volleyball

Albany 3, Maine 2

At Albany, despite trailing two games to one, Albany came back and defeated Maine for its first every America East Championship. Albany automatically goes to the 2004 NCAA championship.

The final game was the tightest. Maine controlled the first half of the game, but Albany came back and tied it at 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. That was when Albany broke away to win 15-13.

Ashley Hunter led the Great Danes (27-6) with 28 kills, and Blair Buchanan had 62 assists.

Carmen Morgan topped the Black Bears (17-11) with 18 kills and 15 digs, Brittany Howe posted 16 kills, Kaili Jordan contributed 13 kills and 10 digs, Leah Guidinger made 12 kills, and Shelly Seipp had 55 assists.

Women’s hockey

Providence 3, Maine 2

At Orono, the 10th-ranked Providence College Friars swept a weekend series from the University of Maine, winning 4-2 on Sunday after a 3-2 victory Saturday.

On Sunday, Maine took a 1-0 lead on a Tristan Desmet goal, assisted by Laura Maddin, but Hilary Greaves and Kelli Doolin scored to give the Friars a 2-1 lead by the end of the period.

Rush Zimmerman and Jenna Keilch added goals for the Friars. Andrea Steranko added Maine’s goal.

Rachel Gettings made 29 saves for 3-4-2 Maine, while Amy Thomas made 26 saves for Providence.

On Saturday, Sonny Watrous scored the winning goal for Providence.

Katelynn Laffin scored Providence’s first goal for before Maine’s Cheryl White tied the match in the second period. The Friars took the lead again with a power-play goal from Greaves. Desmet scored Maine’s second goal.

Thomas saved 16 shots for Providence. Gettings did the same for Maine.

Men?s hockey

Colby 3, New England College 2

At Henniker, N.H., Jared Gordon scored the winning goal off a Joe Rothwell assist three minutes into overtime.

Greg Tam scored the first goal for 0-2 New England College in the second period. Colby?s Kevin Lyons tied it up in the third. Jeff Vandyke gave NEC the lead again before Joel Morash scored for Colby to force overtime.

Chris Ries made 21 saves for Colby. Michael Shimek saved 34 shots for NEC.

Men’s basketball

MMA 83, Wentworth Institute 77

At Middletown, Conn., Maine Maritime trailed by 18 points at halftime before rallying.

MMA was led by Marc McCorrison, who scored 19 points, Neil Stewart had 18 points including four 3-pointers, and Brandon Hall added 17 points.

Sherrad Prezzie-Blue led Wentworth with 26 points, including six 3-pointers.

At Boston, Mass., on Sunday, Nick Farrell had 13 points, three assists and three steals to lead Colby College to victory in the championship game of the Emmanuel College Tournament.

Mike Rutherford added 13 points and six rebounds for the Mules, while Patrick McGowan had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Michael Westbrooks finished with 10 points, while Drew Cohen had eight points and eight rebounds.

At Waltham, Mass., sophomore guard Zak Ray, a Bangor High graduate, scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds Sunday to earn tournament MVP honors as Bates defeated Colby-Sawyer in the championship game of the Brandeis University Tip-Off Tournament.

Bates (2-0) opened the game with a 20-6 run and never trailed.

Junior Andrew St. Clair of Pittsfield had 17 points and 13 rebounds for 1-1 Colby-Sawyer, and was named to the all-tournament team.

UMF 86, Palm Beach Atlantic 75

At Farmington, UM Farmington’s Travis Magnusson was named tournament MVP after scoring 30 points to lead the Beavers past Palm Beach Atlantic in the championship game of the Hight Chevrolet Classic.

Trafton Teague netted 17 points, Steve Ginn scored 16 and Bobby Deetjen scored 13 points for the winners.

Jonathan Maples and Jesse McCue led Palm Beach Atlantic with 14 points each.
