Santa’s Helper Update

Donations to the Santa’s Helper Fund total a little more than $4,000 to date. There’s still a long way to go to reach our $50,000 goal, but with a little help from a lot of people we’re hopeful we can make it.

So much need exists within our communities, and many families are counting on help from The Salvation Army so that they may have food, clothing and a few toys for the children on Christmas morning.

The Salvation Army staff and volunteers already are working long hours between now and Christmas to meet with many of those in need, to gather in donations, and to return those donations in the forms of warm clothing, nourishing food and Christmas cheer. As always, they plan to serve the needs of as many people as possible within the region.

The need is great for many people throughout the year. And as the winter starts to settle in, their plight will likely become more severe.

The following are some excerpts from letters recently received by The Salvation Army:

“This year and a half has been rather difficult for me, adjusting from a good income down to a low income and requiring some assistance just to get by. Since my husband lost his job at the mill, we have struggled to keep our house, but have given up our vehicle, and other things, so that we can afford the mortgage. With help we will get by. We would be overwhelmed on trying to survive and get the basics. Heating this winter is going to be a challenge with the price of oil. When I become more financially stronger, I will contribute back. Thank you.”

“Getting help from the Salvation Army is great help for me and my family. I am a single Mom to two wonderful boys, but without this program I would not be able to afford Christmas for my two boys. I am a disabled Mom who scrapes by with the monthly check I receive. I am very lucky to have the Salvation Army looking out over our family. Thank you.”

Donations may be sent to Santa’s Helper Fund, P.O. Box 1329, Bangor, ME 04402-1329. Donors’ names and dollar amounts will be published in the Santa’s Helper column daily. Donors who wish to remain anonymous will be listed as such, followed by their donation amounts. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
