LEWISTON – Meg Coffin scored a game-high 15 points and Olivia Zurek collected her 1,000th point to help Bates College shock the nation’s No. 2-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies 61-37 in a women’s basketball game at Alumni Gym Tuesday night.
It was Bates’ first win over USM since Jan. 22, 1997.
Bates built a 27-13 halftime lead as the Huskies went just 6-for-26 (23.1 percent) from the floor including 0-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Betsy Hochadel contributed 11 points and Zurek finished with 10 points, six rebounds and six steals. Heather Taylor dished out eight assists.
Megan Myles’ 11 points, Katie Frost’s eight and Ashley Marble’s game-high nine rebounds led USM, which committed 26 turnovers.
