Amateur boxing card in Searsport on Saturday

Ken Wyman spends his days working as a lobsterman. While he’s out on the water, he often recalls his younger days as a competitive boxer.

Last year, Wyman got back into the sport in earnest when he opened Wyman’s Boxing Club in Stockton Springs.

Saturday night, Wyman will bring boxing back to coastal Maine with a 12-fight amateur card at Searsport District High School.

The show, which will include boxers who have won two national championship and five New England titles, begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students (under 18).

“I would like to see boxing come back to the state of Maine,” Wyman said. “We’ve gone the extra mile to put on a real quality show.”

The fight card will include several veteran boxers and a handful of youngsters from Maine, New England, and Canada.

Among the featured performers is 18-year-old Kermit “Bazooka” Gonzalez of Methuen, Mass. The 5-foot-4, 132-pound lightweight boasts a 57-6 record.

Gonzalez, who is trained by Mel Peabody of Lawrence, Mass., and has worked out with Wyman, is a New England Golden Gloves and national Junior Olympic champ.

“No question about it, he’s a world-class boxer,” Wyman said. “He’s definitely going places.”

Three boxers from the Wyman club will fight, including 15-year-old bantamweight Travis Wyman (118 pounds) of Stockton Springs, who is following in his father’s footsteps.

The other Wyman fighters competing will be 13-year-old flyweight Josh Robbins (110) of Belfast and 20-year-old super middleweight Andy Weaver (170) of Belfast.

The show also will include representatives of the Portland Boxing Club and the McAuliffe Boxing Club in Bangor. Boxers will compete in divisions from mosquitoweight (80 pounds) all the way up to super heavyweight.

There also will be a women’s bout pitting Nicki Silveira of Connecticut against a Canadian silver medalist.

“It should be a pretty entertaining show,” Wyman said.
