Current history tough on N.Y. Yankees fans

Well Yankee fans it’s time to remember that you had a three-game lead and proceeded to lose four straight to the Red Sox in the American League championship.

I don’t remember those 26 world titles won by the Yankees, I do remember watching the Yankees crumble to become the laughingstock of Major League Baseball in the year 2004.

Yankee fans have had some candy stolen from them and now they are crying in their beer. You stumbled all right – right into the record books on both ends.

Tune in April at Fenway Park when the Red Sox hoist the World Series banner in front of Jeter and A-Rod and the rest of your Bronx bums.

State’s hunters must abide by target ID law

It’s not unusual that I find myself disagreeing with the opinions expressed by John Holyoke in the sports section. But his recent column (BDN, Nov. 20) regarding the tragic shooting death of a young hunter in Levant was right on target.

Any time a hunter heads off into the Maine woods with a firearm, he or she is legally required to positively identify their target before shooting and, furthermore, to know that the area beyond the target is clear. While the death of James Griffin Jr. is a truly horrible ordeal for all involved, such incidents can’t merely be dismissed as an “accident.”

All hunters, including myself, need to understand that positive target identification is the law in Maine (not to mention an ethical obligation of every hunter) and that failure to abide by the law must result in appropriate punishment.
