Milo man killed in Brownville truck accident

BROWNVILLE – A Milo man died late Wednesday afternoon when the pickup he was driving hit a utility pole at a four-way intersection on Railroad Avenue.

Larry Perkins, 40, was taking Carol Witham, 45, of Brownville to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft where her son was being admitted when the accident occurred, according to Milo Police Chief Todd Lyford.

The accident took place at 5:15 p.m.

Perkins, driving a 1994 Ford pickup, was traveling at a high rate of speed when it appeared he either became distracted or the weather played a role and he failed to make the full turn at the intersection and crashed, the officer said.

Perkins was taken by ambulance to Mayo where he was pronounced dead, Lyford said.

Witham also was taken by ambulance to Mayo, where she remained overnight and was discharged on Thursday, according to Tom Lizotte, Mayo’s director of marketing and development. Witham’s son, Stephen Small, no age provided, was transferred to a Waterville hospital, he said.

Neither Perkins nor Witham was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred, according to the police chief. Perkins’ truck was demolished.

Milo firefighters assisted Lyford and Milo Officer Nick Clukey at the scene.
