Pittsfield council to recognize police sergeant

PITTSFIELD – The Town Council will begin its business meeting Tuesday night by officially recognizing a veteran employee and will end with a budget workshop.

The meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, in the council chambers of the municipal building.

Sgt. Timothy Roussin completed 20 years of service with the Pittsfield Police Department in November and will be presented an achievement award by the Town Council.

The rest of the meeting includes grant amendments and change orders for the $2.6 million airport renovation project. In Town Manager Kathryn Ruth’s advance report to the council, she explained that the changes include flashing, directional approach lights, taxiway edge markers, and a new segmented circle and lighted wind cone.

Ruth said that because reimbursement for the projects could be delayed while a new Congress is seated, the town may need to cover the bills through short-term borrowing. The new safety projects should not exceed $155,000, of which the town’s match would be 10 percent, or $15,500.

The council also will vote on transferring funds between town accounts to cover overdrafts. Those accounts from which the money would be taken include finance, streetlights, highway department, recreation and cemetery. Those accounts requiring additional funds are legal services, community development, general assistance and police department.

The total amount of cash to be moved is $20,200, $10,000 of which is for general assistance.

The council also will vote on accepting a 1999 Ford Explorer as part of a criminal forfeiture. The vehicle would then be sold.

The car was owned by Jason Belmer of Corinna, who was arrested last month in Pittsfield and later sentenced to 13 years in jail for drug trafficking. The car was seized after Belmer’s arrest.

After regular business, the Town Council will conduct a budget workshop for the following departments: library, theater, recreation, community development, airport, community services and any other budgets requiring review.
