Bowdoin tops UMPI to win Star City final

PRESQUE ISLE – The Bowdoin College Polar Bears used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls 65-51 in the championship game of the Star City men’s basketball tournament Sunday.

Bowdoin advanced by beating Boston Baptist 103-46 on Saturday while UMPI defeated Unity 81-56.

Kevin Bradley paced Bowdoin with 18 points while Mark Yakavonis chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Petrie had 11 points.

Fabian Lenox poured in 31 points for UMPI and Brad Kline added 10.

Jeremy Kervin paced Unity to victory in the consolation game with 35 points, Joey Bearce added 25 and Tyler Ferguson scored 12. Cliff Jensen scored 27 for Boston Baptist.

On Saturday, John Goodridge scored 22 points to lead Bowdoin and Sean Walker added 16. Marc Corona scored 17 for Boston Bapstist.

Lenox paced UMPI with 34 points and Alastair Hills put in 24. Nate Olsen and Kervin each put in 14 for Unity.

Yakavonis was named the tourney MVP while Bearce, Corona, Bradley, Lenox and UMPI’s Mike Latchford were selected to the all-tourney team.

Bates wins Hockenbury Tourney

At Northfield, Vt., Zak Ray scored 17 points in the first game and 20 in the championship game to lead Bates College to an 88-58 win over Green Mountain College Saturday and a 80-74 win over Norwich University in the final of the Hockenbury Tourney Sunday.

In the first game, Jon Furbush and Bryan Wholey each scored 11 points for Bates.

Jonathan Simons had 20 points and three steals for Green Mountain and Ross Allen added 10 points.

In the championship game, Furbush scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds for Bates and Wholey added 13 points.

Mitchell wins Star City tourney

At Presque Isle, Mitchell College rallied from a six-point deficit in the final two minutes to defeat the University of Maine at Presque Isle 74-73 in the championship game of the Star City women’s basketball tournament Sunday.

Tournament MVP Jessica London led the winners with 21 points, while Shayna Barnes had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Gina Derosier had 13 points.

Sarah Beasley led UMPI with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Erin Schloeman scored 12 points and Julie Wescott and Liz Sutherland added 11 points each.

In Sunday’s consolation game, Melissa Anaya scored 26 points and Aiyana Spencer added 20 as Fisher College topped Unity 73-37.

Loretta Fitzmaurice had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Unity, while Aubrie Barrett scored 10 points.

Fitzmaurice, Beasley, Wescott, Moriah Anderson of Mitchell and Ronise Andrade of Fisher joined London on the all-tournament team.

On Saturday, Mitchell defeated Fisher 66-51, and UMPI topped Unity 75-33.

Beasley, Wescott and Leah Joy each scored 10 points for UMPI in its victory, while Anna Lenentine added eight points.

Fitzmaurice led Unity with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Barrett scored 10 points with seven boards.

MMA posts two victories

At Castine, Maine Maritime swept two games on the weekend, defeating Lasell 84-44 Sunday after a 54-42 win over Mt. Ida on Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Alyssa Burns led the Mariners with 12 points and nine rebounds. Katie Clapham added 11 points.

Mandi Rapisardi scored 11 for the Lasers.

On Saturday, MMA, led by Michelle Gott, pulled away in the second half to earn the victory. Gott netted 14 points for MMA and Burns added 12.

Thomas sweeps home tests

At Waterville, the Thomas College Terriers won a pair of weekend games, besting Bay Path College 75-30 on Sunday after a 71-26 romp over Wheelock on Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Tammy Fowler had 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks to help Thomas to the win.

Amanda Godley scored 13 points for Thomas and Annie Dyer added 10.

Tianna Carr had 10 points and nine rebounds for Bay Path.

On Saturday, Fowler scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Terriers.

Bates wins Merry Monk title

At Standish, Olivia Zurek had 15 points, 14 rebounds, and four steals to help push Bates College to the win Sunday in the championship game of the Merry Monk Classic.

St. Joseph’s advanced to final game by beating Briarcliffe 76-59 on Saturday while Bates advanced by beating Suffolk 70-60.

In Sunday’s game, Meg Coffin and Betsy Hochadel each scored 12 points to lead Bates to the title.

Laura Pelkey scored 11 points for Saint Joseph’s College and Kaylin Regula added 10 points. Val Dumais had nine points and four steals.

On Saturday, Margaret Blauvelt scored 31 points as St. Joseph’s won its first-round game.

Megan Tetrault added 13 points and Regula 11 for St. Joseph’s.

Toni Jones scored 25 points for Briarcliffe.
