BANGOR – Four firefighters who last week helped rescue a woman from a fire at her Union Street apartment each received an anonymous thank-you over the weekend in the form of a giant fruit basket.

Lt. Gary MacCrae, John Higgins, Brian Higgs and Bill Vanpeursem were on duty the night of Tuesday, Nov. 30, when Merry Carrigan, 43, was found unconscious inside her burning apartment.

The four baskets were left for the firefighters, a gesture that Bangor Fire Department Capt. Anthony Riitano called humbling, even if he didn’t know where they came from.

“We don’t usually see this,” he said. “Sometimes people will write letters to the chief or give a donation, but this is a little unusual.”

Carrigan still is listed in critical condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she is recovering from burns on her arms and legs, a nursing supervisor said Tuesday.

The fire was ruled accidental and was caused by food left unattended on the stove.

Firefighters prevented flames from damaging any of the other three apartments at 255 Union St., but Carrigan’s residence had extensive damage.
