Your editorial, “Tantamount to Torture” (BDN, Dec. 1), reminds us that Alberto Gonzales, the White House lawyer who is President Bush’s nominee for attorney general, thinks it’s OK to torture prisoners, at home and abroad, in the name of anti-terrorism, and that the international law represented by the Geneva Conventions does not apply – it’s “quaint.”
How can the U.S. Senate possibly confirm Gonzales as the chief law-enforcement officer of our nation when he shows such misunderstanding of the tradition and the rule of law? Let’s petition Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to vote against Gonzales’ nomination when it comes to the Senate floor.
