Colonel’s outdoor tip

Maine Wdn. Col. Tom Santaguida offers an outdoor tip to Mainers each week in the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s weekly report.

Here is Santaguida’s most recent tip:

“This year, Maine’s waterfowl season has extended opportunities – as late as Dec. 25 in the southern zone for puddle ducks and Jan. 31 for sea ducks. Along with the extended season comes more exposure for hunters to the possibility of cold-water immersion.

As you may already know, cold-water immersion in Maine’s winter waters can be deadly in a matter of minutes.

Waterfowl hunters need to exercise special caution due to high winds, rough waters and the activity of waterfowl hunting which causes the hunter to often times be moving around at waters edge.

Be safe when late season waterfowl hunting this year: wear a personal flotation device, bring a hunting partner, ensure all of your boating safety equipment is in good repair, bring a cell phone and GPS if available and a survival kit including fire-starting materials.

Late-season waterfowling can be very productive and enjoyable especially if you are safe and prepared.
