FARMINGTON – A local teenager could face charges after the accidental shooting of a friend Thursday afternoon, police said.
Harley Witherell, 21, is expected to recover after a bullet grazed his head. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, said Police Chief Richard Caton III.
The .22-caliber handgun accidentally discharged when a 15-year-old boy was showing off the gun to a group of people hanging out together in the basement apartment of a Quebec Street home, Caton said.
When police arrived, Witherell was sitting on the steps outside of the house, bleeding but conscious while waiting for an ambulance to arrive, the chief said.
“There was no argument or confrontation. It appears the shooting was accidental,” Caton said.
The teenager who fired the weapon was arrested on warrants for a probation violation and violating conditions of release, Caton said.
No charges have been filed in connection with the shooting, but the district attorney could charge him with negligence, the chief said.
