PHIPPSBURG – A local man was killed early Sunday morning after he was ejected from his car and the vehicle then rolled on top of him.

Kenneth McKenney, 37, was heading south on Route 209 and had passed the Fiddler’s Reach Road when his 1991 Chevrolet Camaro veered off the left side of the road and struck a tree, Phippsburg Police Chief John Skroski said Sunday evening, after having spent much of the day investigating the accident.

After striking the tree, the car rolled over, ejecting McKenney. The Camaro came to rest on top of the driver. McKenney was not wearing a seat belt, Skroski said.

Speed appears to have been a factor, and Skroski said police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

The accident was reported at 12:48 a.m. by a neighbor.

Skroski was assisted at the scene by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department and the Phippsburg Fire and Rescue Department.

Phippsburg is a coastal community located south of Merrymeeting Bay.
