BREWER – The Hampden Academy Broncos opened their season in impressive fashion and kept Old Town High School senior goalie J.P. Stowe a busy man.
Senior center Jason Huntley and senior left wing Chris Pease had a pair of goals apiece and the Broncos became the second team in five days to put 71 shots on Stowe as they beat the Indians 8-0 at the T.J. Ryan Center on Wednesday night.
Orono had 71 shots in a 3-0 win on Saturday.
“I’m not bored,” grinned Stowe. “I’ve been getting 60-plus shots [per game] for two years. It’s just another day at the office. I’d like to try to get [the shots] down a little bit but I don’t mind. It gets me in shape and ready for the next game.”
“He’s a good goalie but we have a good team and we can all put the puck on net. Whatever goes in, goes in,” said Huntley.
“It wasn’t a bad first outing,” said HA coach Bill Schwarz. “We had some nice passing plays. We head-manned the puck and generated some speed through the neutral zone. And we got people to the net.”
Hampden scored four power-play goals in five chances.
Although Old Town had just eight shots on HA goalie Rory Woods, the Indians worked hard and did a commendable job getting numbers back to protect Stowe’s net through the first half of the game.
But power-play goals 1:30 apart by Huntley and Nick Beal triggered a decisive four-goal flurry in the second period that covered a span of 4:48. Pease and Matt Soucy had the other goals.
Mike Brown had scored the only goal in the first period and the Broncos received insurance goals in the third period from Huntley, Pease and Kevin Brooks.
Brown’s game-winner was set up by an incisive pass by Brooks.
Brown was alone in the low slot to Stowe’s left and had his back to the goalie when he accepted the pass.
“I turned around, [Stowe] left the other side open and I went the other way with it,” said Brown, who had two assists to go with his goal.
“I wasn’t squared up. I didn’t challenge enough. He made a nice shot right over my blocker,” said Stowe.
Huntley expanded the lead 7:30 into the second period when he kicked the puck from behind the net into the slot, chased it down and swept it past Stowe.
“I just didn’t get my stick down or squeeze my legs tight enough,” said Stowe.
Beal, a freshman created a lasting memory in his debut by converting the rebound of a snap shot from the right point by Ian Lee.
“The puck bounced right out to me and I was in the perfect spot. I backhanded it right between the goalie’s legs. It was a pretty easy goal. I was pumped,” said Beal.
Pease made it 4-0 by swooping on a loose puck and snapping a wrister into the upper short-side corner and Soucy jammed a deflected shot off the stick of Kyle Sparacio inside the near post.
Stowe said Hampden has a “very good team” but felt he wasn’t as sharp as he was against Orono.
“I wasn’t really feeling it today like I was in the Orono game. I wasn’t really in that zone. I won’t let that happen again,” said Stowe.
Old Town first-year coach Scott Wilcox said he was pleased with his team’s effort.
“I’m not discouraged by any means. We’re making huge steps from last year and we’ll continue to make steps this year,” said Wilcox. “J.P. is doing a great job for us.”
