Two-vehicle collision in Bangor results in thousands of dollars in damage

A two-car collision on Wednesday morning in Bangor resulted in thousands of dollars in damage to both vehicles.

Aaron Jankowski, 19, of Bangor was in his 1995 GMC pickup, heading through a green light at the intersection of North Park Street and Broadway, when Peggy Wentworth, 50, of Hampden abruptly turned onto Broadway, causing Jankowski to crash into Wentworth’s passenger side.

Jankowski’s truck had $1,500 in damage, while Wentworth’s vehicle had approximately $2,500.

An Indian Island resident wanted on a warrant was arrested Tuesday evening in Bangor. Ashley Coffman, 24, had an outstanding warrant for theft after failing to appear in court in July.

Officer Butch Moor entered Coffman’s place of employment, the restaurant Smokey Bones on Hogan Road, arrested her without incident and took her to Penobscot County Jail. Coffman posted bail later that evening. A court date is set for Jan. 10.

A Milford woman escaped serious injury Sunday when a snowplow blade smashed into the windshield of her van in Hermon.

Jamie Higgins, 23, was headed south on Kelley Road at approximately 6 p.m. when Dana Hewes, 40, of Hermon apparently backed his plow into her Dodge Caravan at the intersection with Route 222, according to Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Peter Garland.

The snowplow blade was in the locked position and did not puncture the windshield, but would have struck Higgins’ head had it been about a foot lower, Garland said.

“It could have been a lot worse,” he said Tuesday.

Higgins bumped her knee as she tried to get out of the van and was treated on scene by emergency medical personnel, Garland said. A juvenile passenger in her vehicle was not injured, he said.

Hewes, a private contractor for the town, said his snowplow was stopped and Higgins’ vehicle slid into the blade. The case will be forwarded to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to determine if any charges will be filed, Garland said.

He estimated the damage to the Dodge Caravan at $3,000 to $4,000.
