Smith’s foul shot carries Calais to win

CALAIS – Emily Smith nailed a free throw with no time remaining to lift the Calais Blue Devils over the Washington Academy Raiders of East Machias 55-54 in girls basketball action Thursday.

Smith put up a shot at the buzzer and missed, but was fouled. She made the first free throw for the win and finished with a game-high 18 points.

Danielle O’Brien chipped in with 13 points for the winners and Tracie Eagan added 11.

Margaret Mawhinney paced the Raiders with 17 points and Sara Rushforth added 16.
