State raps Lamoine on handicap ramp

LAMOINE – Selectmen will make changes to the town office entrance to comply with the American with Disabilities Act.

A group of volunteers from the Maine Secretary of State’s Office inspected polling places earlier this year and the office released a report showing deficiencies at many municipal polling places, according to Stu Marckoon, administrative assistant to selectmen.

The findings for Lamoine included that the ramp leading to the town office was too steep; that there were no handrails on either side of the ramp; a bulletin board in the hallway leading to the voting booths stuck out; and the parking spot for handicapped residents was not marked properly.

Marckoon said the state issued its report to cities and towns statewide just days before the Nov. 2 election, asking that improvements be made before the election.

Marckoon said selectmen discussed the issue at length during their Thursday meeting. They will meet on a Saturday in January, measure the ramp and decide what to do.

“We want to do what we can” to improve access, Marckoon said.

Also Thursday, the selectmen’s meeting was aired live on community access channel 7 on the Adelphia system. It was replayed Friday afternoon.

The town needs volunteers who can run the video cameras. Assuming there are enough volunteers, every selectmen’s meeting will be televised live, Marckoon said.

The board meets every other Thursday at 7 p.m.
