Eddington man remains jailed in connection with burglaries

BANGOR – An Eddington man remained jailed Monday, unable to make bail on charges stemming from a series of burglaries in Brewer involving more than $10,000 in stolen property.

Bail for Steven Ellis, 35, was set at $500 cash in 3rd District Court in Bangor.

He remained in the Penobscot County Jail following his arrest on burglary charges Thursday.

The break-ins at various buildings in Brewer date to September 2003.

Bail conditions set Monday include no contact with his alleged victims and the people he had been living with in Eddington.

Ellis is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in District Court in Bangor on charges stemming from a November burglary.

He was convicted of burglary in 1999 in Penobscot County Superior Court.

So far, Ellis is facing at least seven charges, including burglary, receiving stolen property, burglary to a motor vehicle and theft, according to Brewer police Detective Sgt. Jay Munson. Much of what was stolen, including thousands of dollars in power equipment and a generator, was recovered last week from the home in Eddington where Ellis had been staying.

Ellis admitted taking cash and credit cards on Aug. 19 from a Kings Court home in Brewer, according to a court document. Ellis later went to an area discount store and looked for people who were buying high-priced items.

He offered to charge the item on the stolen credit card if people would pay him half the cash value of the item. Copies of receipts attached to a police report filed Monday in District Court showed nearly $400 in merchandise that included alcohol and a child’s booster seat on stolen credit cards.

Ellis also allegedly stole a patio table with an umbrella sporting a beer logo and patio chairs from Geaghan’s Pub in Bangor on the Fourth of July.

He also allegedly stole vehicles in September 2003 from Enterprise Car Rental in Brewer. One of the vehicles was found Sept. 3, 2003, in Marden’s parking lot in Brewer. The stolen truck was loaded with tools that apparently had been stolen the day before from a construction site.
