Follow Baldacci’s lead

On Dec. 14, I traveled to Augusta to attend the public hearing on Gov. Baldacci’s property tax relief package.

Although I had to leave before I had an opportunity to testify in support of the governor’s bill, I want to acknowledge and applaud Gov. Baldacci for taking a significant step in the right direction and for making property tax relief top priority. His leadership has placed this issue on the front burner.

Last fall many firefighters throughout Maine campaigned against the Palesky measure. The overwhelming message we heard from our neighbors and fellow citizens was property tax relief is needed now.

Maine citizens should know that their governor was listening and that he heard their message loud and clear. In response, he has proposed a package that will provide immediate and long-term relief.

I encourage the Select Committee on Property Tax Relief and the entire Legislature to follow Baldacci’s lead and work together to pass property tax relief as outlined in the package – now.
