LEWISTON – A city man died Friday of burns he received when his house caught fire.

Public Safety Department spokesman Stephen McCausland said Robert Leger, 64, died in the hospital just hours after firefighters pulled him from his burning home.

The house caught fire sometime around noon Friday.

Investigators believe the fire was caused when Leger – who was on oxygen – lit up a cigarette, he said.

The fire was confined to a bathroom and an adjacent hallway, though other parts of the house were damaged by smoke and heat, McCausland said.

No one else was in the home at the time of the fire, he said.
