DAMARISCOTTA- A man who set off an overnight search and rescue operation by jumping from a bridge into the Damariscotta River could wind up in hot water with the law.
The search ended Friday morning when authorities learned that the man, who is in his mid-20s, is safe.
Neither the Coast Guard nor the Maine Marine Patrol would release the man’s name or comment on why he jumped Thursday night from the short span that links Newcastle and Damariscotta.
State and local officials may issue a civil citation or file criminal charges against the man, said Sgt. Jonathan Cornish of the Marine Patrol.
“It is an active investigation. We have some more people to talk to,” he said.
