On Dec. 16, an unfortunately negative letter appeared in the Bangor Daily News concerning SAD 48, aimed directly at the breakfast program, but also creating a negative sense about the entire system; so let’s get the record straight.

SAD 48 does not deny any child access to any of its programs, and, for those who are late in the morning due to busing, additional time is allotted to allow all students time to have breakfast.

In reviewing our records, neither of these parents’ children were ever denied breakfast and, in fact, either one or both of the children have had breakfast every morning except for Nov. 10. The buses were not late that day.

The breakfast program and hot lunch program offered by this district meet federally mandated guidelines and is not a part of our district budget or local taxpayer costs. The only way the program works or has income is to sell meals, so we do not turn children away.

Children who arrive late but were not on a delayed bus will be asked to report directly to their classes. At that point, the cafeteria is already closed in preparation for the noontime meal.
