CARIBOU – A Woodland woman stopped, looked and listened Tuesday morning at a downtown intersection when suddenly an orange ball from a 106,000-pound crane smashed through her rear windshield.
Police said Robin Stetson, 37, escaped injury when she had stopped her 1999 GMC Jimmy shortly before noon at the intersection of Main and High streets.
“Ms. Stetson was waiting to merge into traffic, and she looked up and saw a huge orange ball coming through her back window,” said Officer Douglas Bell.
Bell said Scott Marhak, 33, of Sanford was driving the 106,000-pound Linkbelt crane, which is owned by Irving Equipment Division of J.D. Irving Ltd. Marhak was on his way to Brewer in the crane when he took a wrong turn that forced him into downtown Caribou.
“Mr. Marhak failed to stop, and the ball smashed out her back and side windows,” said Bell. The crane also struck the rear of Stetson’s vehicle.
No one was hurt in the accident, but Bell estimated that $4,000 in damage was done to Stetson’s vehicle. The crane was not damaged.
No charges are expected to be filed as a result of the incident.
