Symphony effort in schools funded

BANGOR – The Bangor Symphony Orchestra was recently awarded grant funding from Target Stores 2004 Community Giving Program and from the Simmons Foundation.

Coordinated by education coordinator Surya Mitchell, the program takes groups of musicians – and sometimes Xiao-Lu Li, the orchestra’s music director and conductor – into local schools for workshops, demonstrations and performance.

Grant funding from Target Stores and the Simmons Foundation is targeted specifically for outreach in rural Maine schools, many of which have little or no access to music education.
