Plymouth couple hurt in car rollover on I-95

HAMPDEN – A Plymouth couple suffered injuries Saturday when their car left Interstate 95, rolled several times and came to rest in the median.

Police believe the driver dozed off just before the crash, which occurred about 4:50 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95, according to state police Trooper Dan Ryan.

Joseph Albert, 43, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for leg injuries. Albert, who had been driving, remained in the hospital Sunday. A hospital nursing supervisor said he was listed in fair condition on Sunday.

Albert’s wife, Kathy Albert, 43, a passenger in the car, also was taken to EMMC, where she was treated and then released.

One of the two pet dogs traveling with the Alberts was struck by a passing vehicle and died at the accident scene. The other dog escaped injury, Ryan said.

According to Ryan, Kathy Albert told police that she believed her husband fell asleep at the wheel of their 2001 Hyundai Accent, which was demolished in the crash.

Ryan said it appeared both accident victims were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

No other vehicles were involved, Ryan said.
