ORONO – Maine overcame a two-goal deficit and rallied for a 5-4 women’s hockey win over Yale on New Year’s Day.
Cheryl White led the Black Bears, scoring twice, including what would turn out to be the game winner in the third period.
Brigette Laflamme, Tristan Desmet and Kate Sunstrum also scored for 9-5-2 Maine. Jenna Spring scored Yale’s first and last goals. Natalie Babony and Nicole Symington each netted one for the 9-6 Bulldogs.
Rachel Gettings saved 23 of 27 shots for the win. Yale’s Sarah Love and Shivon Zilis combined for 17 saves on 22 shots.
Men’s basketball
UMFK goes 2-2 in tourney
At Halifax, Nova Scotia, Bartas Samaitis and Shawn Carol powered the University of Maine-Fort Kent to wins over Nova Scotia Agricultural College and Kings College after dropping two games this weekend in the Atlantic Coast Classic.
The Bengals beat NSAC 86-63 Saturday and topped Kings College 86-70 Sunday. In Saturday’s first game, Mount Saint Vincent beat UMFK 96-53. The Bengals fell to University College of Cape Breton Friday 81-68.
In Saturday’s second game, Carol scored 18 points and Derrick Cooper added 15 for UMaine-Fort Kent. Darius Parker and Samaitis each chipped in with 14. Patrick Havard led the scoring for Nova Scotia with 17 points.
In Sunday’s game, Samaitis scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half and Billy Russo netted 14 of his 23 points after halftime. Aaron Carpenter led Kings College with 20 points.

Women’s basketball
UMM, UMFK win at tourney
At Halifax, Nova Scotia, Kelly Welles scored 22 points to help lead the University of Maine-Machias to a 57-43 win over the University of New Brunswick Saint John in the consolation game of the Atlantic Coast Classic tourney.
UM-Fort Kent earned two wins Saturday in the tournament. The Bengals defeated the University of New Brunswick- Saint John 65-38 and the Royal Military College of Canada 61-51. Mount Saint Vincent University defeated Ste Foy 56-46 in the championship game.
In UMFK’s first game, Ashley Hichborn led the Bengals with 23 points. Mary Ann Welsh added 13 points and Jessica Gagnon had 10 points. Jacqueline Kennedy scored 10 points for UNB Saint John’s.
In UMFK’s second game, Melissa Hare scored 19 points for the Bengals. Welsh contributed 14 points and Dana Lemon added 11 points. Kate Montambault totaled 21 points for Royal Military College.
The all-star team was made up of Mary Ann Welsh (UM-Fort Kent), Sara Ricker (UM-Machias), Heather Stillwell (Kings), Sarah Ruolderham (MSVU), and Marie Michelle Gervois (Ste Foy). Wendy Hutchinson of MSVU won MVP honors.
