ORONO – The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the University of Maine department of animal and veterinary sciences has rescheduled the equine breeding management clinic. It will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the University of Maine, D.P. Corbett Business Building, Room 107.

ORONO – The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the University of Maine department of animal and veterinary sciences has rescheduled the equine breeding management clinic. It will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the University of Maine, D.P. Corbett Business Building, Room 107.

The day will open with a talk about the UMaine Equine Program by Dr. Alan Kezis, UMaine department of agriculture resource economics. A discussion of the economics of the horse-breeding industry will be presented by Dr. Jim Leiby of the UMaine department of resource economics and policy development.

An overview of reproductive anatomy, pregnancy and foaling will be given by Dr. Robert Causey of the UMaine department of animal and veterinary sciences. Dr. Causey also will discuss breeding problems of the mare and stud.

Dr. Jim Weber, of the UMaine department of animal and veterinary sciences will discuss nutrition of the mare and foal and breeding options with the mare.

Dr. Dennis Ruksznis of Foxcroft Veterinary Service will present recommendations for preventative management of breeding issues through vaccinations and biosecurity. Program participants will have an opportunity to ask questions of all speakers in a roundtable discussion. A tour of the UMaine equine facilities at the Witter Center will follow the clinic.

Registration fee for the program is $10 and includes workshop materials, program costs and refreshments. Lunch may be purchased from the Memorial Union Marketplace. Some scholarships are available for those unable to pay the registration fee. Ten percent of the registration fee will be contributed to the UMaine animal science student fund.
