BANGOR – The Bangor High girls basketball team logged another stellar defensive effort Wednesday night, this time stopping of the best shooters and one of the toughest forwards in Big East Class A.
The Rams’ zone defense was too much for intown and conference rival John Bapst in the matchup at Red Barry Gymnasium as Caroline Weymouth scored 11 of her 21 points in the second quarter in a 50-31 victory over the Crusaders.
“We did a real good job defensively,” Bangor coach Tom Tennett said. “Katie Andrle’s a real good player and we had to keep the ball out of her hands. For the most part, Kelsey [Curtis] and Alyssa [Ogden] did a nice job on her. I’m really proud of the way the kids played.”
The Rams’ zone press gave John Bapst (1-3) some trouble at times, but it was in the half-court where 4-0 Bangor excelled. Bangor’s 1-3-1 and 2-3 zones held guard Chere Wickstrom to nine points from the floor and forward Andrle to seven overall.
Wickstrom finished with 13 points, including 3 of 10 attempts from 3-point range. She hit one to open the second half, but Weymouth responded with a 3-pointer on the other end, kicking off a 9-0 run.
“We came out in zone and wanted to concentrate on Andrle and Chere,” Weymouth said. “I just think we played really well. We worked hard in practice and we knew we had to step it up.”
And the Rams also played well offensively. Weymouth helped Bangor take a 15-point lead into the locker room.
John Bapst was able to overcome early turnovers – the Crusaders turned the ball over on their first four trips down the court and had eight turnovers in the first quarter – and took an early 6-5 lead when Hillary Laferriere put back the rebound of her own missed free throw.
Bangor pulled away, however, as Serena Dubois regained the lead for the Rams when she scored on a putback, sparking an 11-0 run.
Bangor outscored Bapst 13-5 in the second quarter. Ilyse Angst scored off a pass from Alyssa Ogden late in the period, which were the only two points Weymouth didn’t score in that quarter.
“We were supposed to be more patient and we needed to take care of the basketball better in the first quarter,” Bapst coach Mike Webb said. “We had a lot of unforced turnovers. But I’m pleased with our effort and our hustle.”
Weymouth did benefit from assists by Emily Heath and Dubois, among others, as Bangor played patient offense.
“The flex worked really well. It’s hard to defend,” said Curtis, who added eight points and was one of eight players to have at least two points. “We ran the court well.”
Bangor shot a fine 11-for-15 from the free-throw line.
Like their offensive numbers, the Rams also shared the work on the boards. Curtis and Amy Hackett each had a team-high six rebounds and seven other players had at least two rebounds apiece for 39 as a team.
The Rams are hoping Wednesday’s win will give them some momentum for Friday’s home matchup against undefeated Oxford Hills of South Paris.
“Tomorrow we’ve got to get ready for them,” Curtis said. “Coach says they’re a good all-around team.”
