WINTERPORT – A local male juvenile was arrested after he allegedly broke into a Main Street apartment Tuesday and made off with a 100-pound safe and a container of change.
Waldo County Detective Bryant White said the 17-year-old was picked up on a burglary charge about three hours after the 6:51 p.m. break was reported. An adult female is also under investigation for her alleged participation in the burglary, White said Wednesday.
White said the thief apparently used a fire escape to gain access to the apartment. After climbing the fire escape, the burglar forced open a window and went inside.
White said he was led to the suspect after he and Deputy Jonah O’Roak conducted a series of interviews. White said the safe and its contents were recovered from a ditch on the Twining Road. It had been forced open and the ammunition within was scattered nearby.
White said the juvenile allegedly took the coins to Bangor where they were converted to currency after being processed by a cash-sorting machine. The money was spent in Bangor, he said. The burglary remains under investigation.
