LIBERTY – A Searsmont man was killed Friday in a two-vehicle collision on Route 3.
Sgt. Gerry Madden of the Maine State Police said Aubrey McClellen, 73, was traveling east on Route 3 when his 1998 Ford van collided head-on with a 2005 Freightliner two-axle, 29-foot-long truck driven west by Peter Bishop, 48, of Old Orchard Beach.
The accident, which occurred about three-quarters of a mile west of the Liberty Trading Post, was reported at 2:40 p.m. McClellen was pronounced dead at the scene.
McClellen’s van strayed across the centerline of the highway for an undetermined reason, Madden said. The collision occurred partially on the westbound shoulder, he said, indicating Bishop’s attempt to avoid the crash.
Weather was not believed to be a factor in the crash, nor were drugs or alcohol.
State police are investigating whether McClellen had any medical conditions that may have caused him to lose control of the van. Police were also trying to determine whether he was wearing a seat belt.
Bishop was wearing a seat belt and suffered only minor injuries. He was treated at an Augusta hospital and released.
