George, Marin power Bangor by Cony

BANGOR – The Bangor High School Rams have never won any kind of schoolboy hockey championship but they continued to serve notice that they’re going to have to be reckoned with this season.

Junior right wing Dylan George and junior center Andy Marin had hat tricks and the Rams threw a 61-shot barrage at 15-year-old Cony High sophomore goalie Nick Claudel en route to a 9-2 Class A win over the youthful visitors from Augusta at Sawyer Arena Saturday.

Bangor’s triumph was its fourth in a row and upped its record to 7-2. Cony fell to 2-5.

George and Marin scored their goals in the first two periods as Bangor outshot Cony 49-5 and built a 6-1 lead.

George’s three goals gave him nine goals and an assist over his last four games. Marin’s hat trick was the first of his high school career.

“We’ve got some young kids who are learning how to work hard and they got a good lesson tonight,” said Cony coach Chad Foye, who had 11 sophomores and three freshmen among his 17 players. “Bangor works hard and goes to the puck hard. They outworked us all the way around.”

Bangor’s top three lines continuously pressured the Cony net and the score could have been more lopsided if it wasn’t for the impressive goaltending of Claudel, who finished with 52 saves including 43 through the first two periods.

“We have three lines that can work, generate some scoring opportunities, and play responsibly defensively,” said Marin. “Cony didn’t quit. They gave a good effort. And their goalie stood on his head. He’s a good goalie.”

Bangor broke the game open in the second period as George and Marin alternated goals in a span of 5:06. They had staked Bangor to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals 34 seconds apart before sophomore right wing J.P. Carey scored the first of his two goals for Cony.

Carey got his second in the third period after Nick Payson and Ben Silver had expanded the lead to 8-1. Standout Bangor defenseman Jason Eremita scored a well-deserved, one-handed goal to cap the scoring.

Junior Payson, the left wing on a line with George and senior center T.J. Vaniestine, had three assists to go with his goal. Junior right wing Ben Estabrook had two assists.

“The guys played well for all three periods,” said Bangor coach Dan Kerluke.

It took a while for Bangor to pull away from Cony as the visiting Rams did a respectable job of tying them up in front of their own net while Claudel was making save after save.

But George started the decisive second-period flurry at the 6:48 mark by roofing the puck from a tough angle to Claudel’s left.

“I was camped out at the side of the net and got a lucky bounce. The puck deflected to me,” said George. “I was right along the goal line, I saw a very little angle and I went for it.”

George converted a Mike Varney rebound – between Marin’s second and third goals – on a breakaway off an Estabrook pass and a poke-in just before Claudel was able to completely cover up the puck with his glove.

Claudel said he was surprised by the Bangor shot total.

“It didn’t feel like it [61 shots]. I had the adrenaline going. I wasn’t thinking about anything but stopping the puck,” said Claudel.
