Husson men win twice, extend streak to five

JOHNSON, Vt. – Husson College of Bangor erased an eight-point halftime deficit while scoring 51 second-half points Sunday on its way to an 86-80 North Atlantic Conference men’s basketball victory over Johnson State.

The Eagles earned a 25-13 edge from the foul line to win their fifth consecutive game.

Tyler Muzzy poured in 31 points to power Husson College of Bangor, now 3-1 in league play. Buddy Leavitt tossed in 24 points and snatched 10 rebounds, while Phil White added 10 points.

Charlie Viana’s 23 points and 10 rebounds led Johnson State (1-4 NAC), which shot 52 percent from the field.

UMFK 1-1 in tourney

At Poultney, Vt., the University of Maine-Fort Kent rolled to a 105-55 win in the consolation game of the Green Mountain Tourney Sunday after losing to Fisher College 113-78 Saturday.

All-tourney selection Brandon Levasseur, a freshman, paced 4-13 UMFK on Sunday with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Bartas Samaitis added 19 points and seven rebounds, Billy Russo had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Ketrron Simpson had 13 points and five steals.

Jermaine Gerald led Paul Smith College with 21 points.

On Saturday, Mike Newcomb, Carmine Charles and Steve Terry each scored 29 points to lead Fisher.

Rytis Kriunas paced UMFK with 25 points while Russo added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Samaitis chipped in with 19 points and Darius Parker had 10 points and five steals.

At Alfond Arena in Orono on Sunday, the Black Bears outshot the Pioneers 74-8 on the way to their eighth straight victory.

Amy Quirion scored two third-period goals for 11-5-2 UMaine, while Morgan Janusc posted a goal and an assist. Cheryl White added a goal, with Andrea Steranko and Tristan Desmet providing two assists each.

Brigit Laflamme also had an assist for the Bears behind Rachel Gettings, who made seven saves.

Stephanie Boulny piled up 70 saves, including 29 in the first period, for 4-9-1 Sacred Heart.
