With snow on the ground, those who participate in the sixth annual Five Club Poker Run to benefit Pine Tree Camp for Handicapped Children and Adults in Rome will have a choice.
They will be able to help raise funds for this worthy cause either by snowmobile or by vehicle.
If there is no snow, well, it will be done in the vehicle of your choice.
Check-in time for the event sponsored by the snowmobile clubs of Carmel, Glenburn, Hampden, Hermon and Levant is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 15, at any of the five club locations.
Susan Hall of the Hampden Snowmobile Club wants “to stress that this is open to the public,” she said. “It’s not for snowmobilers only.”
She did add that “it would be nice, however, to have snow so it could be done by sled.”
But whichever way you participate, the event is fun for all who attend, she said.
The cost of the event is $5 per hand with no limit on the number of hands purchased, and 100 percent of the net Poker Run proceeds benefit Pine Tree Camp.
Each club sponsors a breakfast, lunch or supper, so you can make a full day of it. You will also have a chance to enter raffles, and you might even win a door prize or two.
Although last year’s snowless event was a vehicular one, Hall said that for the three previous years “we could do it by snowmobile.”
And, she added, it’s been a very successful fund-raiser, “getting more successful every year.”
“It’s an event that not only helps out Pine Tree Camp but it’s fun, too, for the clubs to get together and meet new people.
“That’s an extra we didn’t count on,” Hall said.

Roselle Gervais of Bangor wrote recalling the good time she was having shopping with relatives at the Presque Isle Mall until she discovered she had left her purse on a bench where she was sitting.
Gervais found her purse at the Lost and Found, she wrote, “and was told that the lady who found it worked at Pandora’s Box.”
“I went in to thank her; I was so grateful to her,” Gervais continued. “It’s refreshing to know that there are still honest people in Presque Isle.”
Gervais added, thanks to that “good Samaritan act,” she was able “to enjoy the rest of my day with my relatives.”
