All-State Jazz Festival

BANGOR – The Maine All- State Jazz Festival was held Jan. 6-8 at Bangor High School, with a concert of four performing ensembles on Jan. 8.

The ensembles were made up of 76 students representing 38 Maine schools – all selected by audition. The festival was sponsored by the Maine Music Educators Association.

The jazz choir comprised 24 singers, including students from Bangor High School, Brewer High School, Hampden Academy and John Bapst Memorial High School. Cassandra Morgan was the director.

The honors combo was directed by John Cooper of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, a well-known local jazz musician. Graham Breedlove, trumpet soloist with the Army Blues, directed the honors jazz band, and Trent Austin directed the jazz band.

On Jan. 7, students were treated to a concert with the Pat Michaud Big Band.

Bangor Adult Education

BANGOR – Bangor Adult Education has announced its list of classes for the spring semester.

Evening courses, which start the week of Jan. 24, are: accounting I, pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, astronomy, Bible literature, biology with lab, chemistry with lab, contemporary literature, general math, general science, genocide and Holocaust, geography-civics II, grammar I, graphic novel, Maine writers, physics with lab, practical writing, pre-college writing, reading-study skills, U.S. history part I, U.S. history part II, vocabulary and spelling.

United Technologies Center Continuing Education

BANGOR – United Technologies Center has announced its continuing education classes.

Trade and technology courses are: advanced projects in auto body repair, basic car care, basic carpentry, basic electrical for the homeowner, small engine repair, welding I and II, woodworking.

Business skills and new career courses are: introduction to criminal justice, customer service skills, introduction to paralegal, QuickBooks Pro 2004, associate real estate broker law, introduction to real estate, real estate CEUs (coming soon).

Computer technology courses are: beginner Microsoft access database design, introduction to computer repair and maintenance, Microsoft Excel I and II, HTML Web design, Microsoft Powerpoint I, Microsoft Word I and II.

Healthcare courses are: CPR and AED training, CPR recertification, CPR-first aid and AED training, medical terminology I and II.

Wilderness and outdoor recreation courses are: beginner flat-water kayaking, intermediate kayak rescue review, intermediate open water kayak skills, kayaking by GPS, kayak navigation, kayak rescue skills clinic, Maine sea kayak guide training, sea kayak rolling clinic, Maine Guide hunting and recreation, Maine trapping course, wilderness First Responder, Global Positioning System.

Horticulture courses are: landscape design, grow your own organic garden.

Personal enrichment courses are: introduction to photography, personal self-defense, DVD scrap-booking video montage.

Career skills and personal development courses are: assertiveness training, basics of starting a business, career-life planning, financing your future, self-esteem for women.

Bangor High School

BANGOR – Forty-one Bangor High School students have earned the designation of AP Scholar from the College Board in recognition of achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Exams.

Janice Gunther qualified for the National AP Scholar Award, the highest level of achievement, by earning an average of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams.

Erik Alquist, Sean Boley, Brienne Cressey, Kyle Cronin, Nathaniel Goodell, Janice Gunther, David Kelly, David Kleinschmidt, Kyam Krieger, Donald Lewis, Tyson Lo, Adina Rosenthal, Kayle Shapero, Jue Wang, Cameron Webb, Shane White and Elizabeth Witham qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award. They earned an average grade of 3.5 on AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more.

James Bailey, Kaitlin Dirrig, Caitlin Edwards, Jennifer Guare, Benjamin Holsapple, Michael Larochelle, Nicholas Larochelle, Shotaro Takahashi and Benjamin Weissman qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more.

Alexander Bennett, Adam Boss, Christopher Dean, Sean Frauley, Andrew George, Mark Gonyar, Timothy Hardy, Cleman Herring, Danielle Lainez, Caroline Larson, Michael Nadeau, Rebecca Rogers, Sarah Rogers and Katrina Schweikert qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher.

Students took the exams in May. Bangor High School’s overall exam average was 4.6.

Hampden Academy

HAMPDEN – Elizabeth Lloyd, a student at Hampden Academy, will attend Presidential Classroom’s program Feb. 19-26 in Washington.

PC scholars interact with Washington insiders, including members of Congress, presidential appointees, senior military officials, top business leaders and journalists.

Students observe the U.S. Congress in action, visit their congressional offices and debate current issues with peers from the United States and abroad.

They visit landmarks such as the White House, the U.S. Department of State and Arlington National Cemetery. Other activities include a seminar on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, a Central Intelligence Agency briefing and foreign embassy visits.

Presidential Classroom has prepared young leaders for responsible leadership since 1968. Through the assistance of leading corporations, foundations and individual donors, scholarships are available to exceptional students with financial need. Old Town High School

OLD TOWN – For several years, the Old Town High School math department has offered a monthly contest called Spotlight on Math for all faculty, staff and students.

The math department provides one problem to solve. From the correct responses, two winners are drawn, and they receive two tickets each, compliments of Spotlight Cinemas in Old Town.

The months of November and December were combined due to so much vacation time. Winners were Robert Vayda, Heather Kasserman and Joe Robbins. January’s problem can be picked up from any math teacher.

. Winners in Mrs. Bailey-Bowen’s Gourmet Foods class for gingerbread house construction and decoration were Nia Ramsey, Brittany Levesque and Nicole Rustin. The eight entries were placed around the community in locations including the YMCA and senior citizen housing.

. Selected members of the junior class are preparing for the performance of Junior Prize Speaking, which will take place Feb. 2 in the high school cafetorium. Speakers will perform monologues focusing on the humorous side of gender conflicts. The event will include a performance by a select ensemble from the Old Town High music department. Participating speakers are Forrest Bush, Jeff Dow, Mary Falls, Will Hamilton, Clarissa Livingston, Kari Stowe, Denise St. Peter and Seth Tillotson. The performance, under the direction of English teacher Cheryl Spencer, is open to the public at no charge.

Orono High School

ORONO – Orono High School music parents will sponsor a yard and bake sale 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Church of Universal Fellowship, 82 Main St.

Proceeds will defray the costs of students going to New York City in April. Donations for the sale may be dropped off 2:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 13-14 at the church.

Orono Adult Education

ORONO – Orono Adult Education has announced classes for this semester, with most classes beginning the week of Jan. 31. Courses offered are:

. Basic reading and math skills program.

. GED Prep classes.

Diploma classes are: biology, community law, contemporary issues, English, math, orientation seminar.

Vocational courses are: career counseling, Sign language: beginners and novices, woodworking parts I and II, Windows XP basic computer.

Personal enrichment courses are: adoption 101, Asian arts and crafts, basket weaving, beginner and intermediate ballroom dance, certified nurse assistant course, country-crocheted rag rugs, intro to Tellington Touch for Companion Animals for parents and children, beginner and intermediate personal Tarot, beginner and intermediate photography, quilting, RAD Self-Defense for Women, t’ai chi, SAT preparation, Saturday Storyland, Family Literacy Program.

Johnson and Wales University

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Elizabeth Strout of Bangor and Bethany Samiya of Hampden have been named to the dean’s list at Johnson and Wales University.

University of Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. – John Busing of Brewer received a doctorate in sport and exercise science Dec. 10-11 at commencement ceremonies at the University of Northern Colorado.
