Cheating the rest of us

In response to the article, “Excise tax protests prompt legislation” (BDN, Jan. 10), I would suggest that fairness begin with enforcement of existing dealer laws.

Many of us see someone we know cruising around town with a dealer plate, but they never seem to have a vehicle for sale. From mom to Aunt Mabel, these “dealers” sign up with the state, and can now provide the whole family with “tax-free” vehicles.

Usually these characters are driving late-model automobiles, thus avoiding thousands in excise tax that the rest of us have to pay.

To the car dealer who never has a boat on the lot but occasionally advertises a “never registered” boat for sale – to the camper dealer with two or three motor vehicles sporting the tax- free ride … shame on you. You’re doing nothing less than cheating the rest of us.
