A flock of wild turkeys, icy road conditions and driver inexperience combined to cause a Levant accident Saturday afternoon that led to minor injuries and about $12,000 in vehicle damage.

Amy Watson, 21, of Camden had stopped her 2005 Toyota on the Avenue Road while waiting for the flock of turkeys to cross to the other side.

Meanwhile, Dustin Plummer, 16, of Dexter crested the hill and saw the birds. He swerved to avoid the turkeys but lost control on the ice, Deputy James Kennedy of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday.

Plummer’s 1996 Subaru station wagon struck Watson’s car before his car flipped over.

When Plummer emerged from the wrecked vehicle, he complained of stomach, chest and wrist pain. His car had an estimated $7,000 in damage.

Watson’s new Toyota had about $5,000 in damage.

The icy road conditions required two wreckers to remove the Subaru wagon, Kennedy said.

A Bangor motorist was arrested Friday night in Bangor on alcohol- and drug-related charges, four days after he pleaded not guilty to a drunken driving charge. His passenger was arrested on two drug charges.

Brent McGary, 35, of Bangor admitted to having a “few” drinks when stopped for speeding by Bangor police Officer Steve Jordan, according to the police report. Jordan arrested McGary after field sobriety tests but reported that McGary didn’t complete the tests and refused to take the Intoxilyzer test.

McGary had a conditional license that forbade him from drinking alcohol and driving. Police said that in connection with another case, McGary had pleaded not guilty Jan. 10 to a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants.

Jordan charged him with OUI, operating a motor vehicle without a license, violation of condition of release and possession of a Schedule W drug, hydrocodone. The last charge was lodged after a Penobscot County Jail corrections officer found half a prescription pill in the man’s right front pocket, police said.

The other half of the pill was found when police searched McGary’s passenger. Bangor police Sgt. Thomas Reagan assisted Jordan at the stop and reported catching the passenger, Anthony Worster, 39, of Bangor, holding several pills in his hands while sitting in the car.

Reagan said he climbed into the car to grab Worster’s wrist so he didn’t destroy the pills. A search also revealed the companion half to the pill found in McGary’s possession. Worster was charged with possession of a Schedule W drug and possession of a Schedule Z drug.

A Howland woman who didn’t do such a good job of hiding the items she was trying to steal from a Bangor convenience store was arrested Friday night on theft and drug charges, according to police.

An employee of the Irving station on Broadway told police that he could see two bags of candy sticking out from the woman’s pants and that when he confronted her about it, she removed some of the items from her pockets but then picked up some other items in their stead. Confronted again, the woman locked herself in the restroom and the store employee told police he could hear flushing sounds several times.

Bangor police Officer Rob Angelo arrived to find Dawn Robinson, 32, now outside the restroom, and he ordered her to empty her pockets. She unloaded two bags of candy, a bag of sunflower seeds, a pack of gum, two large lollypops and a snack cake. She also wore two pairs of glasses on her head with stickers still on the lenses, although the woman claimed she had owned them for about a month, Angelo reported.

Angelo determined the glasses and other items belonged to the store.

Also found in the woman’s possession were five pills with MethoDose 10 written on them. Robinson admitted that her friend had given her the methadone pills. She was charged with theft and possession of a Schedule W drug.

Bangor police charged a local man with theft after it was reported he failed to make good on a rental agreement for $3,000 in home furnishings.

Bangor police charged Christopher Gustin, 21, with a felony theft and with operating a motor vehicle after license suspension.

An employee of RentWay in Bangor alerted Bangor police on Thursday that Gustin had made two payments since he rented a 60-inch television, DVD player and queen-size bedroom set in October.

Gustin had moved out of his apartment, disconnected his phone and moved in with his girlfriend on High Street, so that’s where Bangor police Officer Kerry Libby looked for him. Not finding him at home, she expanded her search in the area.

Turning onto Clinton Street from Union Street, she spotted Gustin’s red and silver king cab pickup truck and made eye contact with the male driver.

Libby said that when she caught up with the vehicle moments later, a woman was driving and Gustin was in the passenger seat.

Confronted, Gustin claimed he didn’t know where the stuff was, but also said he would rather go to jail than reveal who had it.

He was arrested and taken to jail, but not before his girlfriend admitted she and Gustin had switched places in the pickup truck at the intersection, police said.

A Filene’s employee was charged with theft after she was caught stealing more than $700 in clothing from the store, according to police.

A loss prevention officer at the store said that employee Melissa White, 23, of Old Town was seen ringing up items, then voiding the sales and placing the clothing in bags and taking them out to her car. On two occasions she also took $10 from the cash register, reported Bangor police Officer Myron Warner.

White admitted taking the clothing, valued at $713.95, and claimed that she took them for herself, according to police. She said that she would not take the clothes on behalf of others and she stated that she was not a “druggie,” according to police.
