Hartford tops slumping Bears

HARTFORD, Conn. – A late rally that cut a 14-point deficit with four minutes left to three with just less than a minute to go wasn’t enough to help the University of Maine men’s basketball team avoid its fourth loss in its last five games Wednesday night.

Junior guard Ernest Turner scored a career-high 30 points, but it couldn’t stop the University of Hartford from posting a 73-67 victory over the Black Bears at Reich Family Pavilion.

Hartford improves to 6-10 overall and 2-5 in America East play. Maine dips to 8-8 and 3-4.

Maine narrowed a Hawks’ lead that peaked at 16 points in the second half to 67-64 with 48 seconds left, but Hartford reeled off five unanswered points.

Junior point guard Charles Ford scored seven of his nine total points and six in the final four minutes from the foul line to help the Hawks pull away.

“We’ve got to get back to work on a few things,” said Ted Woodward in a postgame interview. “We turned the ball over way too much.”

Maine committed 22 turnovers for the second straight game. Hartford had 17.

Maine had two other double-digit scorers as junior guard Kevin Reed of Yarmouth, Mass., and senior forward Mark Flavin of Weymouth, Mass., finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Reed also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds while Flavin had six.

David Ruffin led the Hawks with 24 points. Brian Glowiak and Aaron Cook scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Ruffin also had five rebounds, five steals, and four assists.

The Hawks outshot the Bears 45.6 percent to 43.1 percent from the field in the game.
