Soap Box Derby race

BANGOR – Registration for the Eastern Maine Soap Box Derby will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Bangor Armory on Main Street.

The race will be held June 4.

Registration is $25. New racers need birth certificates.

There also will be a display and registration Feb. 6 at the Bangor Mall.

Participants also may register online until April 30 at www.mainesoapboxderby.org. For information, call 945-3982.

Bangor Y tournaments

BANGOR – Bangor Y Basketball has scheduled its basketball tournaments.

. Feb. 25-26, third and fourth grades.

. March 4, 5, 6, seventh- and eighth-grade girls.

. March 11, 12, 13, seventh- and eighth-grade boys.

. March 18, 19, 20, fifth- and sixth-grade girls.

. March 24, 25, 26, fifth- and sixth-grade boys.

The first 12 teams to register will be accepted. The team fee is $150.

Hampden recreation

HAMPDEN – Winter session II programs sponsored by the Hampden Recreation Department include karate, senior fitness, coed adult volleyball, coed adult indoor soccer, ski and snowboard lessons for grades one through 12, and Scribble Masters arts and crafts for preschoolers. Registration deadline is Feb. 16.

Spring session programs include volleyball clinic for grades one and two, volleyball leagues for grades three through eight, karate, senior fitness, coed adult volleyball, T-ball for 4- and 5-year-olds, instructional baseball for ages 6 through 9, Smart Start sports skills for ages 3-5, and tentatively, horseback riding for ages 7 and up. Registration deadline is April 20.

Registration packets are available at the town office or www.hampdenmaine.com.

Scholarship program

Each year, the American Lung Association awards $500 scholarships to three Maine graduating seniors involved in the game of golf as a player or employee.

Those eligible must plan to pursue higher education in a medical or health-related field. Other criteria include academic achievement, financial need, references and a completed application.

The program recognizes ALA Golf Privilege Card courses and driving ranges.
